Do you remember learning all your state capitals in grade school? I would guess most kids knew the capital for their home state, but I would bet many were tripped up by some other states with smaller cities serving as home to their governments. For example, I have aunts and uncles who live just outside of St. Louis, Missouri, a city with the Gateway Arch landmark, one of the best teams in baseball (Go Cards!), the St. Louis Blues and the sporadic home to a couple NFL teams. As a kid, I thought, how could Jefferson City be the capital of the state and not St. Louis or even Kansas City? I wonder if kids felt the same way about Tallahassee and Florida (if you did, send us a note). But there’s a reason why Tallahassee is our state capital, and I’ll give you a hint. The reason is similar to why Jefferson City, which is in the middle of the Show Me State, is the capital of Missouri.
